Become a Certified Nursing Assistant

The Certified Nursing Assistant

The CNA

Becoming a CNA is an excellent first step into the healthcare field and provides valuable experience for those planning to continue their education in nursing or other healthcare professions. In Florida, individuals must meet the state’s eligibility requirements and successfully pass the CNA competency examination to become certified.

What Is a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)?

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is an important member of the healthcare team who provides compassionate, hands-on care to patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). CNAs help patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, mobility, and comfort while also monitoring and reporting changes in a patient’s condition.

Florida CNA Certification Process

florida cna certification process

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Florida is a straightforward process. At Leesburg CNA Training Center, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a Florida Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Step 1: Meet Florida Eligibility Requirements

Before applying for the Florida CNA State Exam, make sure you meet the state’s eligibility requirements. You must be able to provide valid identification and qualify to take the examination under Florida’s testing requirements.

Step 2: Enroll in Our CNA State Exam Prep Course

Our 16-hour CNA State Exam Prep Course provides comprehensive preparation for both the written knowledge exam and all 21 Florida clinical skills. You’ll receive hands-on instruction, instructor coaching, and test-taking strategies to help you succeed

Step 3: Complete The Prometric CNA Application & Background Screening

After completing the course, complete your Prometric online application and your Level II Livescan Background Screening at approximately the same time. Your background screening must be reviewed and approved by the Florida Board of Nursing before you can be scheduled for testing.

Our staff will assist you with:

  • Completing your application

  • Registering for the state exam

  • Understanding required documentation

  • Answering any questions along the way

Florida requires a Level 2 Live Scan Fingerprint Background Screening before certification can be issued.

Good news! We offer Level 2 Live Scan Fingerprinting right here at our training center, making the process convenient and saving you time.

Step 4: Background Screening Review

Once your Level II Background Screening has been submitted, the Florida Board of Nursing will review your background screening.

After your background screening has been approved, the Board of Nursing will notify Prometric that you are eligible for testing. Prometric will then email you your examination date.

Most applicants receive a testing appointment within 2–4 weeks (approximately 14–30 days) after all requirements have been met, although processing times may vary.

Step 5: After the Exam

After completing your examination, Prometric will provide your results according to its current reporting process. Many candidates receive their results the same day.

If you do not pass one portion of the examination, you only need to retake the portion you did not pass.

Florida allows up to three attempts to pass the examination. If you do not pass after three attempts, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program before becoming eligible to test again.

Step 6: Receive Your Florida CNA License

Once you have successfully passed both portions of the examination and met all licensing requirements, the Florida Board of Nursing will place your name on the Florida Nurse Aide Registry, and you can verify your certification and print your license online.

Successfully passing both portions of the examination demonstrates that you have the knowledge and skills necessary to work safely as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Maintaining Your CNA Certification

To keep your Florida CNA certification active:

  • Renew your certification every two years

  • Complete all required continuing education (CE) and in-service requirements

  • Report continuing education through CE Broker, when applicable
